Is your tooth Sensitive to Cold?

Sensitive teeth to cold can be uncomfortable and may indicate an underlying dental issue. Sensitive teeth can turn enjoying your favorite ice cream into a painful experience. At Wilmot Family Dentistry, we recognize tooth sensitivity’s impact on your daily life. Whether it’s a twinge while sipping a cold beverage or a sharp sensation while brushing, cold Sensitivity can be uncomfortable and frustrating. Let’s explore the causes behind sensitive teeth and discover effective home remedies to ease the discomfort.

Here are some common causes and home remedies for sensitive teeth to cold:

Causes of Sensitivity to Cold

  1. Enamel erosion: The protective enamel covering your teeth can wear down over time due to acidic foods, aggressive brushing, or certain medical conditions. When enamel erodes, it exposes the sensitive underlying dentin, leading to Sensitivity, especially to cold temperatures.
  2. Gum recession: Receding gums can expose the roots of your teeth, which lack the protective enamel covering found on the crowns. This exposure can make your teeth more sensitive to cold stimuli.
  3. Tooth decay: Cavities can compromise the structure of your teeth, making them more susceptible to Sensitivity, particularly when exposed to cold temperatures.
  4. Cracked teeth: Hairline cracks in your teeth can allow cold temperatures to reach the nerves inside the tooth, triggering Sensitivity.
  5. Dental procedures: Sensitivity to cold may develop after specific dental treatments such as fillings, crowns, or teeth whitening.

Home Remedies to Cold Sensitivity

  1. Desensitizing toothpaste: Consider switching to a toothpaste specifically formulated for sensitive teeth. These toothpaste contain ingredients like potassium nitrate or strontium chloride, which can help block the transmission of sensations from the tooth surface to the nerve.
  2. Gentle brushing technique: Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and avoid vigorous brushing, as aggressive brushing can contribute to enamel erosion and gum recession, exacerbating Sensitivity.
  3. Limit acidic foods and drinks: Acidic foods and beverages can contribute to enamel erosion. Limit your consumption of citrus fruits, sodas, and sports drinks to help protect your enamel.
  4. Fluoride mouthwash: Rinse with a fluoride mouthwash daily to strengthen enamel and reduce Sensitivity.
  5. Wear a mouthguard: If you grind your teeth, especially at night, wearing a mouthguard can help protect your teeth from damage and reduce Sensitivity.
  6. Professional fluoride treatment: Your dentist can apply a fluoride gel or varnish to strengthen your enamel and decrease Sensitivity.
  7. Maintain good oral hygiene: Brush and floss regularly to remove plaque buildup and prevent dental problems that can contribute to Sensitivity.

To effectively manage tooth sensitivity to cold, incorporating the following habits into the  oral care routine can make a significant difference:

Use a soft-bristled toothbrush: Opt for a toothbrush with soft bristles and brush gently in a circular motion to avoid further enamel wear and gum recession.

Practice proper oral hygiene: Brush your teeth twice daily and floss daily to remove plaque buildup and prevent dental problems that can exacerbate Sensitivity.

Avoid acidic foods and drinks: Limit your intake of acidic foods like citrus fruits, tomatoes, and vinegar, as well as acidic beverages such as soda and fruit juices.

Quit smoking: Tobacco products can contribute to gum disease and enamel erosion, increasing tooth sensitivity. Quitting smoking can improve overall oral health and reduce Sensitivity.

Visit your dentist regularly: Regular dental check-ups allow your dentist to monitor your oral health, identify potential issues early, and provide personalised recommendations for managing tooth sensitivity.

I am petrified at going to the dentist. Anxiety is unbelievable. Lizette was so kind and supportive with all my questions and anxiety from the minute she picked me up from the front. Dr Lyman was great. Gentle, kind and let me know what was going on and what I needed to do and when. Definitely going to be my dentist from now on. I have a plan thanks to Dr Lyman and Lizette. Thank you!!
They’re awesome. All the staff is kind, respectful and professional. They always take care of myself, my wife and even my 4 year old has always felt comfortable enough there to be excited to go to the dentist now! Definitely recommend.
Grateful to be back on track with a plan of care. Everything was explained to me clearly with upfront pricing and I appreciated having more than one option.
I came into wilmot family dentistry a little nervous at the state of my teeth and everyone was very kind. And the procedure was very easy. I felt welcomed and I’m excited to go back.
Caring and knowledgeable. Saw me not being his patient. I had a dental emergency and saw me same day I called. I appreciate his concern for people. My own dentist wouldn't see me even when I mentioned it was an emergency. She said she was busy all day. Thank you Wilmot Family Dentistry.

Great experience Hygienist very gentle Very Professional Highly recommend
Dr. Lyman and all of his staff are fantastic. I originally found his practice when I needed a GOOD family dentist for my children but what I got was EXCELLENCE. I called him in a panic late last year after being told devastating news by another dental staff/office and he fit me in as an emergency right away. Immediately, Dr. Lyman and all of his assistants/techs/staff provided reassurance, hope, and an excellent plan for my care. I recently lost my dental benefits coverage and this dental office is so professional and nurturing that I will continue as a self-pay client because the ease and quality of care I'm receiving is worth it. Thank you Wilmot Family Dentistry!!
New to the area and had tooth sensitivity, they were able to see me right away, fixed the issue at the same appointment, professional and helpful and they take my insurance, what's not to like?!
Michelle was an excellent hygienist! Easily the best one I’ve ever had (I’m in my 60s, so I’ve had a few). Dr. Lyman was kind, friendly and spoke to me, not at me, about what was going on and made suggestions on how I could change my preventative dental care going forward. No up-sales, no pressure, such a kind and caring approach. Very happy with my new dental team.
Dr. Lyman and his staff are very professional and polite. He always takes the time to check in on me puts me at ease because it’s not my favorite place to go but I know I am in good hands. A shout out to Melissa she is amazing. Kim C
The folks at Wilmot Family Dentistry are courteous and welcoming and at the same time professional. Thank you to Dr. Lyman and Allison for the hands-on care and to all those who provided preparatory and administrative services.
