Dentures and implants are two choices for restoring a lost tooth or teeth.

A multitude of variables impact your decision, including cost, personal preference, and the quality of your jawbone and remaining teeth.

The American Academy of Implant Dentistry says More than 36 million Americans are toothless, and 120 million Americans are missing at least one tooth. These figures are anticipated to rise over the following two decades.

If you find yourself in this circumstance, you may want to consider dentures or dental implants. However, before you pick which choice is best for you, you must first understand their differences.

Dentures

Dentures, also known as removable teeth, are artificial, removable tooth replacements. They are custom-made in a dental laboratory using your mouth impression and the color of your teeth and gums. One may need whole or partial dentures depending on the number of teeth that need to be replaced.

Unconvincing false teeth are a thing of the past. Modern dentures are designed to be as natural as possible in appearance and feel, allowing you to chew and talk normally while also supporting your cheeks and lips.

Pros of dentures

  • Dentures are less expensive than other solutions, especially if a significant number of teeth need to be replaced.
  • They can be fitted sooner following an extraction than implants.
  • Removable dentures need minimal to no surgery.
  • Patients can choose between detachable and fixed (implant-retained) dentures.

Cons of dentures

  • Despite technological developments, some believe that dentures still do not look or feel as real as implants.
  • Dentures are less durable than implants and are more prone to degeneration.
  • Certain foods and beverages are harmful to dentures, so one may need to change the diet.
  • Removable dentures do not give as much support as implants. They will not additionally support your mouth.

Dentures Pros & Cons

Implants

Dental Implants are a long-term tooth replacement solution. The implant is a titanium post that is surgically put in your jaw to function as a tooth root, holding a prosthetic tooth in place while also stabilizing your jaw.

Pros of Implants

  • Implants imitate natural teeth in look, feel, and function.
  • They promote new bone development to protect your jaw from shrinking.
  • You do not have to give up your favorite meals and beverages.
  • When properly cared for, implants can last significantly longer than dentures, typically for decades.

Cons of Implants

  • Implants are more costly than dentures (although they usually last longer).
  • Oral surgery is required for implant installation.
  • If your jaw is too tiny to accept an implant, bone grafting may be necessary, which may jeopardize your eligibility.
  • Extra visits and waiting time may be necessary for implants, especially if bone grafting is required.

I am petrified at going to the dentist. Anxiety is unbelievable. Lizette was so kind and supportive with all my questions and anxiety from the minute she picked me up from the front. Dr Lyman was great. Gentle, kind and let me know what was going on and what I needed to do and when. Definitely going to be my dentist from now on. I have a plan thanks to Dr Lyman and Lizette. Thank you!!
They’re awesome. All the staff is kind, respectful and professional. They always take care of myself, my wife and even my 4 year old has always felt comfortable enough there to be excited to go to the dentist now! Definitely recommend.
Grateful to be back on track with a plan of care. Everything was explained to me clearly with upfront pricing and I appreciated having more than one option.
I came into wilmot family dentistry a little nervous at the state of my teeth and everyone was very kind. And the procedure was very easy. I felt welcomed and I’m excited to go back.
Caring and knowledgeable. Saw me not being his patient. I had a dental emergency and saw me same day I called. I appreciate his concern for people. My own dentist wouldn't see me even when I mentioned it was an emergency. She said she was busy all day. Thank you Wilmot Family Dentistry.

Great experience Hygienist very gentle Very Professional Highly recommend
Dr. Lyman and all of his staff are fantastic. I originally found his practice when I needed a GOOD family dentist for my children but what I got was EXCELLENCE. I called him in a panic late last year after being told devastating news by another dental staff/office and he fit me in as an emergency right away. Immediately, Dr. Lyman and all of his assistants/techs/staff provided reassurance, hope, and an excellent plan for my care. I recently lost my dental benefits coverage and this dental office is so professional and nurturing that I will continue as a self-pay client because the ease and quality of care I'm receiving is worth it. Thank you Wilmot Family Dentistry!!
New to the area and had tooth sensitivity, they were able to see me right away, fixed the issue at the same appointment, professional and helpful and they take my insurance, what's not to like?!
Michelle was an excellent hygienist! Easily the best one I’ve ever had (I’m in my 60s, so I’ve had a few). Dr. Lyman was kind, friendly and spoke to me, not at me, about what was going on and made suggestions on how I could change my preventative dental care going forward. No up-sales, no pressure, such a kind and caring approach. Very happy with my new dental team.
Dr. Lyman and his staff are very professional and polite. He always takes the time to check in on me puts me at ease because it’s not my favorite place to go but I know I am in good hands. A shout out to Melissa she is amazing. Kim C
