What are Dental Crowns?

Dental Crowns are the most effective way to repair damaged teeth. Our teeth suffer a lot of wear and tear as we age. As a result, our teeth can acquire cracks, chips, and other damage from consuming sugary and acidic meals to grinding and clenching. Dental crowns can be an efficient treatment in such circumstances.

A dental crown is a form of dental treatment in which the whole visible section of a broken or decayed tooth is covered. It is designed to appear and feel like a natural tooth while acting as a protective coating to prevent additional damage and decay.

Types of Dental Crowns:

  • Ceramic/porcelain: These crowns are popular because of their natural tooth-like look.
  • Porcelain-fused-to-metal (PFM): These crowns are stronger than all-ceramic crowns because porcelain is bonded to a metal foundation.
  • Alloy: These crowns are exceptionally durable and appropriate for rear teeth that require stronger biting and chewing strength.
  • Metal alloys: These crowns are non-noble metals and resistant to corrosion and breakage.
  • All-resin: These crowns are the least expensive alternative, but they are less robust and more prone to chipping and wear than other types of crowns.

Dental crowns can improve the overall health of the mouth and your physical well being in several ways:

  • To restore a broken or damaged tooth: A dental crown can cover and protect a tooth that has been broken or chipped due to trauma, decay, or other reasons.
  • To protect a weakened tooth: If a tooth has become weakened due to decay, a large filling or has had a root canal, a dental crown can reinforce it and prevent it from breaking.
  • To improve appearance: Dental crowns can be made from various materials, including porcelain, ceramic, and zirconia, which can be custom-colored to match your natural teeth. This makes them a great option for improving the appearance of a misshapen, discolored, or severely stained tooth.
  • To support a dental bridge: A dental crown can be used to support a dental bridge, which is used to replace one or more missing teeth.
  • To cover a dental implant: If you have a dental implant, a dental crown can be placed over it to provide a natural-looking tooth replacement.

A dental crown is normally obtained after two visits to the dentist. The dentist will prepare the damaged or decaying tooth at the initial appointment, collecting impressions and dimensions to construct a fitted crown. Until the permanent crown is ready, a temporary crown will be put over the prepared tooth.

The temporary crown will be removed at the second appointment, and the permanent crown will be cemented. The replacement crown will be polished to give it a more natural appearance and feel. Dental crowns are an extremely efficient way to restore damaged or rotting teeth. Dental crowns, with proper care and maintenance, can last for many years and give a beautiful, functional, and healthy smile.

Very accommodating and professional staff! Excellent care, thank you.
I am petrified at going to the dentist. Anxiety is unbelievable. Lizette was so kind and supportive with all my questions and anxiety from the minute she picked me up from the front. Dr Lyman was great. Gentle, kind and let me know what was going on and what I needed to do and when. Definitely going to be my dentist from now on. I have a plan thanks to Dr Lyman and Lizette. Thank you!!
They’re awesome. All the staff is kind, respectful and professional. They always take care of myself, my wife and even my 4 year old has always felt comfortable enough there to be excited to go to the dentist now! Definitely recommend.
Grateful to be back on track with a plan of care. Everything was explained to me clearly with upfront pricing and I appreciated having more than one option.
I came into wilmot family dentistry a little nervous at the state of my teeth and everyone was very kind. And the procedure was very easy. I felt welcomed and I’m excited to go back.
Caring and knowledgeable. Saw me not being his patient. I had a dental emergency and saw me same day I called. I appreciate his concern for people. My own dentist wouldn't see me even when I mentioned it was an emergency. She said she was busy all day. Thank you Wilmot Family Dentistry.

Great experience Hygienist very gentle Very Professional Highly recommend
Dr. Lyman and all of his staff are fantastic. I originally found his practice when I needed a GOOD family dentist for my children but what I got was EXCELLENCE. I called him in a panic late last year after being told devastating news by another dental staff/office and he fit me in as an emergency right away. Immediately, Dr. Lyman and all of his assistants/techs/staff provided reassurance, hope, and an excellent plan for my care. I recently lost my dental benefits coverage and this dental office is so professional and nurturing that I will continue as a self-pay client because the ease and quality of care I'm receiving is worth it. Thank you Wilmot Family Dentistry!!
New to the area and had tooth sensitivity, they were able to see me right away, fixed the issue at the same appointment, professional and helpful and they take my insurance, what's not to like?!
Michelle was an excellent hygienist! Easily the best one I’ve ever had (I’m in my 60s, so I’ve had a few). Dr. Lyman was kind, friendly and spoke to me, not at me, about what was going on and made suggestions on how I could change my preventative dental care going forward. No up-sales, no pressure, such a kind and caring approach. Very happy with my new dental team.
Dr. Lyman and his staff are very professional and polite. He always takes the time to check in on me puts me at ease because it’s not my favorite place to go but I know I am in good hands. A shout out to Melissa she is amazing. Kim C
